OPENING DAY!

Hello Bexley Community Gardeners,
Have you mowed your lawn yet? Just checking. Anyone who answers yes is automatically assigned to the weeding committee.
This Saturday April 10 is the Bexley Community Garden Spring Work Day. All the 2010 available plots have been rented but there is a waitlist. If you didn't get signed up for a plot, you can still sign up for the waitlist on the Bexley Parks and Recreation online registration website.
We will be meeting at the garden Saturday at 10AM to greet new gardeners, assign plots and mulch paths. Please bring shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and old newspaper (to place under the mulch) if you can. Doppler10 shows 0% chance of rain on Saturday, so it looks pretty good for gardening. If the weather changes drastically, our severe weather date is next Saturday April 17. Please email me if you are not able to come Saturday or if you have any questions. I'm sure we will post plot assignments on the Garden Board and through email afterwards.
Good news: The garden is plowed and composted and all the spring preparation activities are on schedule. We have results back from the soil testing and the pH was 7.2 (which is about right) and the N/P/K results are high. I'll post any official recommendations for more additives or adjustments once the executive committee has had a chance to review the tests and discuss them with our master gardeners. We added the compost after soil samples were taken, so I'm guessing fertility is pretty good now. If any of you are soil scientists lurking out there, let me know. We can always use an expert opinion!
Finally, I wanted to tell you our resident Master Gardener, Barb, will be teaching six weeks of Vegetable Gardening Classes at the Bexley Public Library starting Tuesday April 20. If you are interested, you can sign up on the Bexley Parks and Recreation online activities registration website:
The cost is $30.

"Join us for six weeks of classes which are guaranteed to get you off on the right foot with your vegetable garden, in your own home plot or in a community garden plot. We will be using a variety of resources: speakers, videos, hand outs, suggested books, and samples.

Material to be covered: How to select a site and design / lay out the garden; soil augmentation and composting; plant selection and successive gardening for spring, summer, and fall; garden tools; planting techniques; herbs and insect control; organization for efficiency; how to garden using low maintenance techniques and, when possible, organically; harvesting your produce; and ways to involve children in the garden.

Presenters will be three Master Gardeners form the Franklin Co. / O.S.U. Master Gardening Program.
