Welcome Spring!

Welcome Spring!
Welcome Gardeners!
To those of you who are new to Bexley Community Garden, this is our second year in operation and we have big plans to make it a great year.
The garden operation committee has been planning all winter, and I'm sure you have questions about where your plot is, and when you can start planting. I'm ready to find out too. I spent an hour this weekend sorting through my tomato seed collection looking for the Green Zebras and Brandywines. I like to get the seedlings started under lights so they are ready to plant on mother's day weekend. Its time and I would really like to know where my plot will be!
So let's talk official garden business: We are purchasing 100 cubic yards of triple shredded leaf compost from Kurtz Brothers for delivery in the next couple of weeks. For those of you with concerns about com-til, rest assured. The decision was made not to apply com-til or any material containing com-til on the whole garden. The plan instead is to apply two semi truckloads of leaf compost which will be spread before plowing. After compost application and weather permitting, the garden will be plowed sometime between the last week of March and the first week of April. We will also perform another soil test to confirm that fertility and ph are adequate. I'll email results and any recommendations from our resident Master Gardener (Barb Neubig).
The plots will be mapped out as soon as plowing is complete and you should expect to find out where you will be located during the April work weekend. We need all gardeners and friends to help mulch paths and stake their claim on Saturday April 10 starting @ 10AM (severe rain date Saturday April 17). Bring tools such as shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them.
City of Bexley installed a waterline and two water spigots for us this year. The spigots will be within the garden fence (which probably won't be back up before we get started).
Nearly all of the regular plots have been rented. As of Monday, we had nearly 40 gardeners confirmed and anymore will be waitlisted this year. There are still a few plots reserved for scholarship application. These are available for supervised student projects and/or gardeners with financial hardships.
